Here for the long haul – Invincible Colliery

Nestled amongst the hills and valleys of the Ben Bullen Natural Reserve is Invincible Colliery, a mine that was initiated in the 1940s, in 2013 went care and maintenance and has since been given approval for its reopening. 

After living and studying for several years in Sydney I found that most people have never actually seen a coal mine and picture it to be a dominating and destructive industrial site. Instead many mines in the area are dominated themselves by the landscape, surrounded on all sides by bush land and barely seeming to make a difference to the natural landscape at all. I want to dispel many of the misconceptions around coal mining and energy production, sharing its reality beyond the community that sees it everyday.

It was sad to see it go – The Wallerawang Power Station

This print depicts the demolition of the Wallerawang Power Station that occurred in November of 2021. This event was very important to the community as an iconic, cherished and memorable landmark disappeared from our skylines whilst we gathered along the road to watch. Whilst some were happy to see the Power Station gone, others mourned its loss and pondered the questions it leaves for our community as it seems coal fired power isn’t going away any time soon. 

This work is not a demonstration of a diminishing coal industry but a celebration of the stations almost 7 decades of service to the community and to Australia. How it worked beyond its life expectancy and continued to help fulfil an ever increasing demand for power.

To capture the essence and focus individually on each image I printed each of the seven panels from my It was sad to see it go – The Wallerawang Power Station work in their own editions of 3. These images further freeze this moment of destruction in time, asking the viewer to stop to contemplate each frame isolated from the rest.

My artwork, Home, represents the architecture of some iconic buildings around the Lithgow area. Some of these places I see almost every day, where others contain special memories of childhood or family history. I wanted to investigate the variety of styles, eras, and purposes of these buildings through the past, present and future. This series combines my love of architecture and history as well as my love of the local area, my home.

Blast Furnace

Standing proud, as the beating heart of Lithgow’s industrial history, is the remains of the Lithgow Blast Furnace. Now just mere remnants of the birthplace of Australia’s iron and steel industry, the Blast Furnace is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. So, whether you are there for the history, a relaxing walk through the wetlands, or to hang out with friends, this quintessential monument is iconic to Lithgow.

Escarpment (Govett’s Leap)

Throughout the Lithgow and Blue Mountains regions we are constantly surrounded by beautiful and grand mountains, escarpments and landscapes. I wanted to capture the essence of these empowering natural formations and explore their detail and form in this work. Our unique environment is something I would love to delve further into. I want to share the feeling of being amongst the mountains, breathing the fresh, crisp mountain air and walking along their trails.

Cloudy Day on the Lake

My family and I love kayaking at Lake Wallace and I am always fascinated by the ripples in the water and how the wind and wake of the kayaks affect them. This artwork is an exploration into those ripples and the different hues and shapes they make on a cloudy day and in my kayak’s wake.

The Wolgan Valley is such a unique environment with a soothing and grounding atmosphere. You are embraced by the valley and nestled between the soaring cliffs.
